Description An historical and critical study of genre in Hollywood film. Students will analyse the evolution and transformation of the conventions of key genres, such as the Science Fiction film, the Musical, Film Noir and Horror.

Description This course examines the way Los Angeles has functioned as an imaginative landscape in American fiction and film. The course focuses on the noir genre, because LA noir -with its fantastic convergence of tough guy realism, sex, guns, desperation, and disillusionment-provides one of the most trenchant critiques of the American dream.
