Description

This course builds on MUSA 141 to provide students with further technical skills, musical knowledge and understanding through performance on an instrument or with voice. Students will gain further knowledge of the repertoire for their particular instrument and undertake a concert performance at the end of the semester. This course is only available to students in the Mus.B.

Public performance is also encouraged so that students continue to develop strengths in this area.
This is the second course in a sequence that leads the student towards MUSA342 in which the student will be expected to demonstrate a high level of performance to an external audience.

Students will attend individual lessons and performance classes.

Learning Outcomes

Students who pass this course will have developed:
*  further technical performance skills in an instrument or voice;
*  further music understanding through performance in an instrument or voice;
*  an increased knowledge of repertoire for a specific instrument or voice;
*  improved public performing skills.

Student workload (150 hours) will be allocated to:
*  12 hours attending lessons
*  8–18 hours attending performance classes/masterclasses
*  120–130 hours individual practice, rehearsals, final performance

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Final Recital 70% Performance examination of approximately 15-25 minutes' duration in week commencing Mon 17 Oct.
Participation 30% Teacher's grade for participation in individual lessons and performance classes


The performance examination will be of approximately 15-20 minutes' duration, including technical exercises and at least one short recital piece.  Performance demeanour will also contribute to the mark.

Assessment and grading system

A+  90–100;    A   85–89;    A-  80–84;    B+   75–79;    B 70–74;    B-   65–69;     C+  60–64;     C  55–59;     C- 50–54;     D  40–49;   E  0–39
In a course at 100- or 200-level examiners may grant restricted credit (R) which will be equivalent to a pass for all purposes except as a prerequisite.
