Preparation of Research Papers -

When a member of staff agrees to supervise a research or dissertation paper, a number of expectations arise for both the student and supervisor:
•  The Supervisor will make himself or herself available for consultation by the student at mutually agreed times.
•  The student should consult regularly with his or her supervisor.
•  The initial responsibility of choosing a suitable research or dissertation topic is that of the student.
•  The student is to take all necessary steps to become an effective researcher.  Students who have not completed a legal research course should consult with the Reference Librarian of the Law Library who will assist in the development of appropriate research skills and strategies.
•  The supervisor will assist the student in the development of the research or dissertation proposal and the structure of the paper and comment upon the conduct and progress of the research.
•  The student is to submit a draft for supervisor comment.

A brief summary of the basic requirements for the preparation of research papers is available in the School of Law Style Handout which can be obtained from the School of Law Reception.  The Law Librarians also provide assistance with research skills.
