Description

Construction procurement processes, contract fundamentals and responsibilities, contract administration, integrated project delivery, analysis of trends in procurement and contract administration.

Most construction professionals know about poor performance in construction; too many projects fail and lose money. The problem often starts at the onset of the process, the procurement of services.

This course introduces construction procurement methods, construction contracts, and contract administration. The aim is for students to understand how construction procurement influences the construction processes for typical construction organisations.

Attention will be given to the relationship between the fundamental concepts of construction law and project participants’ responsibilities. The various project delivery methods will be explained and compared.

After the course, the students will have developed an understanding of the key roles and responsibilities in the construction procurement and contract administration processes through analysis of real case study examples related to achieving stated objectives. The course will provide a background for acquiring skills in construction procurement practices, contract administration procedures, and the ability to apply specific project contexts to typical contract administration problems.

The nature of contemporary Māori organisational structures, e.g. rūnanga, hapū, iwi, iwi corporations related to the construction industry, will be discussed, including the traditional and modern realities of Māori society, e.g. tikanga and kawa, adding to a bicultural competence and confidence in construction procurement.
