Description

This course continues the study of the structure of the language and extends your speaking skills. The course aims to increase the range and fluency of conversational ability to help acquire the skills for formal speech at an appropriate level and lay the groundwork for future growth.

An intermediate level course in Te Reo Māori for those who have completed TREO112 or who have recognised prior learning.

This course continues the study of the structure of the language and extends your speaking skills. The course aims to increase the range and fluency of conversational ability to help acquire the skills for formal speech at an appropriate level and lay the groundwork for future growth.

This course focusses on acquisition of more complex sentence constructions and extends knowledge of Māori vocabulary. In particular, knowledge of verbal sentences is enhanced by a study of directional and manner particles and specialised verbal constructions including ‘why’, and ‘why not’, and uses of the negative particle ‘kore’.

The course blends academic study of the language with a range of teaching techniques including language games, waiata, group activities in a Māori immersion learning environment.

Students will have the opportunity to attend a wānanga reo (language immersion marae stay).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course students will be:
• able to converse more readily on a range of topics
• able to understand an increasing diversity of spoken Māori
• able to use and understand an increasing range of sentence structures
• have an increased knowledge of important grammatical words in Māori
• familiar with an increasing range of vocabulary
• able to recite appropriate karakia, hīmene and waiata

Pre-requisites

MAOR110 or MAOR112 or MAOR115 or MAOR125 or MAOR126 or MAOR160 or MAOR251 or TREO112, or 18 credits NCEA Te Reo Rangatira level 1, or a placement test, or with prior learning and ability by permission of Head of School.
