Description

A cross-disciplinary sport science focus of the role exercise and nutrition has in the spectrum from health to enhanced sport performance. Emphasis is placed upon contemporary sport science developments examined through meta-analysis and critiquing of journal articles. Students also have the opportunity to collect data in an area of interest, which may include exercise prescription for making people faster, stronger, more efficient and less susceptible to injury and illness.

Learning Outcomes

1. Debate and critique current theories of the causes of lifestyle diseases and illnesses
2. Perform an advanced analysis of the interaction between energy systems in response to physical exercise at varying intensities
3. Analyse the strength of the scientific evidence supporting or otherwise the use of various nutritional and ergogenic aids for enhancing health, and sports performance.
4. Critically analyse nutritional diets and investigate the interaction between diet modification and health outcomes
5. Research and evaluate current technological advances in fitness assessment tools and training practices
6. Prescribe appropriate training methods for supporting athletes to achieve training goals
7. Analyse repeated-measures data collected in training sessions and communicate key findings to stakeholders
8. Critically analyse and evaluate models of teaching healthy lifestyles in education settings / sport teams.

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Assignment 1 03 Mar 2017 30% Literature review and methods (incl stats) of an exercise topic of interest to you. Word limit: 1500-2000 words (excluding graphs, tables and references). This is due by 4pm on 3rd March 2017.
Assignment 2 07 Apr 2017 30% Results, discussion and conclusion, includes completion of Assignment 1 and the findings and interpretation of your research project, after following the methods proposed in Assignment 1. Word limt: 1800-2200 words (excluding graphs, tables and references). This is due by 4pm on 7 April 2017.
Assignment 3 08 May 2017 40% Abstract portfolio. o This is a group work assignment, but the marks will be adjusted based on your peer's (confidential) assessment of your overall contribution and effort demonstrated in the labs. o Your group is to collectively select 5 of your best experiments conducted during the exercise labs and write academically-styled abstracts to summarise each of your mini-research studies. Word limit: 500 words per abstract (excluding graphs, tables and references). This is due by 4pm on 8th May 2017.
