The Seafood Sector: the management and science behind fisheries and aquaculture
Description
This interdisciplinary course will address major needs concerning the seafood sector. Students will gain knowledge and understanding of seafood and its management including the New Zealand Quota Management System, indigenous fisheries, global fisheries, fisheries economics, environmental issues including biosecurity and fisheries ecosystems, seafood products and their marketing. Perspectives on New Zealand's seafood sector will also be provided by leaders from the seafood sector.
This is a new inter-disciplinary course run in conjunction with the seafood industry and Otago University. Seminars will be in an e-learning facility linked with lecturers and students off-campus. A wide range of topics will be discussed, including aspects of marketing, production, law, economics, food science and biology relating to fisheries and aquaculture. A field trip to Nelson to interact with the seafood industry is a required component of this course.
