RUSS101-12W (C)
Whole Year 2012
Russian 1
Description
Russian language course for absolute beginners based on the communicative approach.
This course will help students to develop basic reading, writing, translating and conversational skills. Students will learn elementary grammar which will help them to construct basic sentences and dialogues in Russian, enhancing their reading, comprehension and translating skills. Minimum vocabulary learnt in the course is about 1,200 words.
It is suitable for English speakers with no knowledge of Russian, and for Russian background students with no literacy skills.
There are no prerequisites for RUSS101, apart from a sound knowledge of English. It is a course for absolute beginners. Its main emphasis is on the Russian language in its written and spoken form. Students gain a basic knowledge of grammar also. Our staff will use a communicative approach combined with audio-visual methods and work in the language laboratory. The fact that all first-year students of Russian are beginners is not as disadvantageous as it might seem. It means, in fact, that the course can focus on basic elements of language which might well be neglected otherwise. It also means that everyone starts at the same level.
