Advanced topics in the study of operant behaviour including core material on stimulus and schedule control of behaviour, and animal perception and cognition.
Our goal is to understand the basic processes and principles that explain choice behaviour of animals. This is an active area of current research, and we will bring students up to speed on recent developments and controversies. We will pay particular attention to quantitative models which have been developed to account for choice, although no special mathematical background is assumed or required. This is a research-based course, and meets the research requirement of the BA (Hons) degree in Psychology. It will take you through the process that leads to research in the area: reading and reviewing the existing literature, identifying questions the answers to which might clarify or advance the area, designing and conducting research that answers such a question, and preparing a written report on it.
