An introduction to Environmental Psychology, an integrative area of psychology which places particular emphasis on people-environment interrelationships and transactions, including environment-behaviour relationships, environmental perception and cognition, environmental stress and adaptive responding, cultural values, disaster preparedness and response, conservation behaviour and sustainability initiatives, and the effects of climate, ergonomics and behavioural design.
PSYC341 addresses how psychological principles can be applied to understand and help solve some of the most challenging problems facing humanity: climate change, overpopulation, resource depletion, pollution, and the loss of biodiversity.
After completing this unit, you should be able to:1. Demonstrate well developed knowledge of how psychological theory and methods can be used to evaluate and help solve environmental problems;2. Examine and formulate personal views around the underlying causes of environmental problems and how psychology can be applied to solve them;3. Recognise and describe the strengths and limitations of the major psychological approaches for addressing environmental problems; and4. Design an intervention to solve an environmental problem using principles from the course.
This course will provide students with an opportunity to develop the Graduate Attributes specified below:
