Description

This course provides an introduction to the field of Industrial Organisational Psychology (I/O Psychology). It will examine the applications of psychological theory and research to the workplace, in particular the contribution of I/O Psychology to enhanced organizational performance and improved employee attitudes. It is a prerequisite for entry into the postgraduate programme in Industrial/Organizational Psychology.

Learning Outcomes

  • develop a basic knowledge of the principal psychological theories in the field and their applicability to the workplace;
  • know how to apply the methods and tools used by I/O psychologists, and have an understanding of their implications for personnel decisions;
  • recognize the psychological and behavioural strategies employed by leaders to manage and influence employee attitudes and behaviour;
  • understand the impact of team and organisational structure on organisational dynamics such as motivation, leadership and interpersonal relationships;
  • be able to critically evaluate material presented in journal articles.
