Advanced study and participation in musical performance within an ensemble, either in live performance or in CD recordings.
FORMAT OF THE TEACHINGStudents will be expected to form an appropriate group (or groups) normally of at least three musicians, and devise a balanced programme of 45-50 minutes. The assigned tutor will provide reasonable assistance, normally on a weekly or fortnightly basis, and approve the programme. A variety of styles, instrumentation and musical approaches will be encouraged. This programme will be prepared and presented at a School of Music concert or other appropriate venue, as agreed to by the course coordinator, normally to be held during or immediately preceding the end-of-year examination period. Alternatively, a CD of 45-50 minutes duration may be prepared and submitted for assessment by the end of the fourth term; the CD should be largely the result of ‘live’ takes, with a minimal amount of editing and post-production enhancement. In recording and preparing the CD, each student is entitled to up to 3 x 3hr recording sessions (with a small amount of set-up assistance from a staff member) and up to two hours with the School of Music’s technician – possibly also with the tutor present – to edit the ‘takes’ and construct the finished product.

WORKLOADStudent workload (300 hours) will be allocated to:• 24 hours contact time with tutor (times to be arranged with the tutor, by mutual agreement, at the beginning of each term)• 256+ hours practice and rehearsal• 10 – 15 hours creating documentation• 1 hour performance, or 10 hours recording / editing

Individual Ensemble Tutors are assigned to each student.
Assessment is largely based either on the student’s ensemble’s public performance or on the basis of a CD performance of the ensemble. Evidence of planning and leadership will be considered in the marking process, together with the associated documentation: for either outputs, a written document (approximately 1,000+ words) of (i) programme notes associated with the selected repertoire, and (ii) an engaging outline of the process, both logistical and artistic, that the ensemble went through in preparation for this event or recording PLEASE NOTE 1. Music performance courses (including MUSI474) are not eligible for aegrotat consideration.2. Private video recordings of examination recitals will not be permitted.The assessment will be undertaken by an external examiner and moderated by a member of the School of Music staff. The tutor will normally be present at the assessment meeting, or the performance and post-performance discussion, but will not take part in deciding the grade.
