Description

Performance work involving weekly individual lessons, performance classes and ensemble training in an approved instrument and the presentation of a public recital.

This course aims to develop technical and musicianship skills in music performance in the student's chosen instrument/voice, and to develop performance experience through participation in concerts of solo and/or ensemble music.

Prerequisites

MUSI131, MUSI172, and MUSI241 (with a B- grade or higher)

Timetable Note

Times of lessons will be by arrangement with the tutor of the instrument.

Workload
Student workload (600 hours) will be allocated to:
*  24 hours attending lessons
*  16-36 hours attending performance classes / masterclasses
*  540-560 hours individual practice, rehearsals, final performance.

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Performance Examination 30% Mid-year performance examination in week commencing Monday 9 June
Final Recital 70% Final recital in week commencing Monday 20 October.


Performance demeanour will also contribute to the mark, as will the programme notes provided by the student.
The mid-year examination will be of 30-40 minutes' duration.
The final performance examination will be a public recital* with a total time of 45-60 minutes** consisting of solo (or accompanied) works.

*   Private video recordings of examination recitals will not be permitted.
** Examination durations should be calculated from start to finish of performed recital, not as a sum of musical content durations.

Assessment and grading system

The following shows how to translate grades to numerical scores:

A+  90–100;    A   85–89;    A-  80–84;    B+   75–79;    B 70–74;    B-   65–69;     C+  60–64;     C  55–59;     C- 50–54;     D  40–49;   E  0–39
In a course at 100- or 200-level examiners may grant restricted credit (R) which will be equivalent to a pass for all purposes except as a prerequisite.
