Description

Advanced music theory (aural perception and analysis of, and writing exercises in chromatic harmony)

This course offers further study of harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic notation, and develops aural skills with a basic competence in rhythmic and melodic dictation, sight-singing and sight-reading, and essential harmony.

Topics covered in this course are:

Rhythm:  notation, syncopation, rhythmic counterpoint
Melody:  melodic notation, diatonic and modal melodies, melodic perception
Harmony: extended harmony, diatonic harmony, post-tonal harmony, harmon ic perception, harmonic nomenclature
Conducting and Score-Reading Skills

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Practical Harmony Tasks 10% Two Practical Harmony tasks (5% each) will be assessed in your allocated tutorial in Semester One.
Rhythm and Sight-Singing Assessmenjts 10% Two individual Rhythm and Sight-Singing Assessments (5% each) will take place in your allocated tutorial in Weeks 7 and 11 (Semester 1).
Conducting or Score Reading Assessments 20% Two Conducting or Score-Reading Assessments (10% each) will take place in your tutorials during Semester 2.
Analysis Exercises 20% Two Analysis Exercises (10% each) will be undertaken in Semester 2.
In-Class Test 03 Jun 2014 20%
In-Class Test 14 Oct 2014 20%

Assessment and grading system

In a course at 100- or 200-level examiners may grant restricted credit (R) which will be equivalent to a pass for all purposes except as a prerequisite.
