Description

Performance work involving weekly individual lessons, performance classes and ensemble training in an approved instrument.

This course aims to develop technical and musicianship skills in music performance in the student's chosen instrument/voice, and to develop performance experience through participation in concerts of solo and/or ensemble music.

Learning Outcomes

Students who pass this course will have developed:
*  Further technical performance skills in an instrument or voice;
*  Advanced music understanding through performance in an instrument or voice;
*  Wide knowledge of repertoire for a specific instrument or voice;
*  Professional preparation and performing skills.

Workload
Student workload (450 hours) will be allocated to:
*  24 hours attending lessons
*  16-36 hours attending performance classes / masterclasses
*  390-410 hours individual practice, rehearsals, final performance

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Performance Examination 30% Mid-year performance examination in weekj commencing Monday 9 June
Final Recital 60% Final recital in week commencing Monday 20 October
Participation 10% Teacher's grade for participation in the individual lessons and performance classes


The mid-year examination will be of 20-35 minutes' duration consisting of technical exercises, and at least one short recital piece.
The final performance examination will be of approximately 25-35 minutes' duration consisting of solo (or accompanied) works.

Assessment and grading system

The following shows how to translate grades to numerical scores:

A+  90–100;    A   85–89;    A-  80–84;    B+   75–79;    B 70–74;    B-   65–69;     C+  60–64;     C  55–59;     C- 50–54;     D  40–49;   E  0–39
In a course at 100- or 200-level examiners may grant restricted credit (R) which will be equivalent to a pass for all purposes except as a prerequisite.
