Description

Performance work involving weekly individual lessons, performance classes and ensemble training in an approved instrument (or in voice) and the presentation of a public recital. This course is only available to students majoring in Performance for the MusB.

The course aims to develop technical skills, musical knowledge and understanding in an instrument or voice, through regular lessons, practice and rehearsal culminating in performances and a performance examination.  It also develops knowledge of the repertoire for the specific instrument or voice, as well as building concert performance repertoire for each student.  Public performance is also encouraged so that students begin to develop strengths in this area.

This is the sixth course in a sequence of six.  The student will be expected to demonstrate a high level of performance to an external audience.

WORKLOAD

Student workload (300 hours) will be allocated to:
*  12 hours attending lessons
*  18–36 hours attending Performance Workshop / other performance classes and/or masterclasses
*  252–270 hours individual practice, rehearsals, working with accompanist, final performance

The teacher's grade (30%) will consider such things as: an assessment of punctuality and reliability in attending lessons, consistency of practice and learning through the year, technical mastery gained through the year, breadth of engagement with the repertoire, participation in Performance Workshop, and any Performance Class specific to their instrument (if in addition).

The performance examination (70%) will be a public recital of approximately 40 minutes duration consisting of solo and/or small ensemble works.  Performance demeanour will contribute to the examination marks, as will the programme notes provided by the student.  Programme notes must be provided by the student to the School of Music Administrator at least two weeks prior to each examination.

PLEASE NOTE:
1.  Music performance courses are not eligible for aegrotat consideration
2.  Private video recordings of examination recitals will not be permitted.

Assessment and grading system

The following shows how to translate grades to numerical scores:

In a course at 100- or 200-level examiners may grant restricted credit (R) which will be equivalent to a pass for all purposes except as a prerequisite.
