Description

This course provides students with further experience in performance in a large ensemble. In the case of orchestra, membership of UC-CYO is an integral part of the course.

This course aims to develop students’ performance and rehearsal skills appropriate to a large ensemble such as a symphony orchestra, brass band, big band, or other ensemble appropriate to the student. The hosting ensemble for MUSA291 in 2018 is the UC–CYO. Students intending to enroll in this course should arrange an audition with this ensemble: following a successful audition the yearly ensemble fee will be paid by the university. Students are obligated to participate in all UC–CYO (or whatever other ensemble of which they are a part) performances in Semester 1; unless there are exceptional circumstances, it is expected that they will remain a member of the Orchestra (or other ensemble) until the end of the year.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students who pass this course will have developed:
  • Expanded technical and ensemble performance skills in a large ensemble;
  • An expanded understanding of one’s instrument’s capacity to contribute to a large ensemble;

Assessment

Assessment Due Date Percentage  Description
Repertoire Review Test 10% In-Class Test
Rehearsal Attendance and Performances 90%

Much of the course’s assessment is as it would be in an equivalent professional ensemble: once you have passed the audition and are admitted to the ensemble, it is expected you prepare the repertoire both through attending rehearsals (and if you have to miss a rehearsal, to let the conductor know of your absence in a timely manner) and looking at the material between rehearsals. In the UC–CYO or any other ensemble that you join for this course (with the agreement of the course coordinator) the intensity and frequency of rehearsals and sectionals etc mean there is nowhere to ‘hide’ in terms of being unprepared etc, so there are no further performance ‘tests’ as part of the course. Attendance at rehearsals, arriving in a timely manner, behaving with a professional demeanour, will all be part of the course’s assessment.

At the end of the semester, usually after performance(s) are over, there will be a brief repertoire and review test given in an interview format – this is to be completed by June 10th: the course coordinator will meet with you and you are expected to give a brief (up to 10 minute) overview of the repertoire just presented, and you’ll be asked some questions related to this, and the rehearsal process. This is worth 10% of the final grade.

It is appropriate with an ensemble course with the professional-level aspirations of UC–CYO (or other ensemble) to grade your performance in the ensemble based on what you contributed, rather than evaluate an individual sense of accomplishment. This means, in practical terms, that non-participation in a performance removes a grade-level (A becomes a B etc).
