This course provides students with experience in performance in a large ensemble. In the case of orchestra, membership of UC-CYO is an integral part of the course.
This course aims to develop students' performance and rehearsal skills appropriate to a large ensemble such as a symphony orchestra, brass band, big band, or other suitable ensemble. The hosting ensemble for MUSA191 is the Christchurch Youth Orchestra (CYO). Students intending to enrol in this course should arrange an audition with the CYO. Students enrolled in MUSA191 who successfully complete the audition with the CYO will have their CYO membership for the year paid by the School of Music.
Students who pass this course will have developed:* ensemble skills;* sight reading skills;* knowledge of the repertoire;* understanding of rehearsal techniques;* experience of public performance;* discipline in self-preparation, careful rehearsing and cooperative music making.Transferable Skills:* Communication skills: public performance, public performing under pressure;* Organizational skills: goal setting and meeting deadlines, attention to detail, punctuality;* Interpersonal skills: the ability to take direction and to work cooperatively, skills in adapting (to various performing environments), assessing own and other's work; group discipline and responsibility.

Programme NotesDue Dates: Students will write original programme notes for a chosen 2016 CYO concert. The notes for each work should be c.300 words in length. Students will submit a draft of their programme notes and receive feedback before submitting a final version.A hard copy, with the official School of Music title page, should be deposited to the drop-box in the UC School of Music foyer by 4 pm on the due date.Mock AuditionDate: Students will play a selection of prescribed excerpts from the CYO's current repertoire in a mock audition situation. Students provide the course coordinator with a copy of their instrumental parts, and will be notified of the selected excerpts three weeks before the assessment.PerformancesDates: Students will participate in all CYO performances in Semester 1; unless there are exceptional circumstances, it is expected that they will remain a member of the Orchestra until the end of the year.
