Description

This course assists keyboard performance students to develop the necessary skills in sight-reading and musical accompaniment.

The course aims to help keyboard performance students to develop necessary skills in sight-reading and musical accompaniment.  In order to be fully functional as piano performers all pianists must develop a set of parallel skills which will enable them to carry out essential tasks at a professional level.  This includes a high level of sight-reading ability and skills in accompanying instrumentalists and singers.  This course provides an introduction to these essential skills and assists students in developing some knowledge of the repertoire for keyboard-accompanied works for other instruments or voice.

Learning Outcomes

Students who pass this course will have developed:
*  sight-reading skills;
*  quick study techniques;
*  basic skills in accompanying singers and instrumentalists;
*  knowledge and experience in working within teaching studios as accompanist
*  transferable skills:  setting and achieving goals: co-operative and collaborative skills.

Prerequisites

Available only to students studying Performance on a keyboard instrument. Entry by permission of the Head of School.

Timetable Note

Student workload (150 hours) will be allocated to:
*  24 hours attending classes
*  36 hours rehearsing accompanying skills
*  90 hours practice

Assessment and grading system

A+  90–100;    A   85–89;    A-  80–84;    B+   75–79;    B 70–74;    B-   65–69;     C+  60–64;     C  55–59;     C- 50–54;     D  40–49;   E  0–39
In a course at 100- or 200-level examiners may grant restricted credit (R) which will be equivalent to a pass for all purposes except as a prerequisite.

A pass is 50 marks and over.
