Development of knowledge of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) and the fundamentals of using computers for digital sampling, mixing and editing. Developing skills in the use of computer-based music notation technologies.
Students will attend lectures and small-group laboratories.Topics covered in this course are:• Basic of using a Macintosh computer• Basics of recording, importing and editing digital audio and MIDI• Features and functions of Logic Pro, ProTools, and Sibelius music software, and how to make creative use of them• Microphones and cables• Basic audio mixing
Students who pass this course will be able to: Demonstrate understanding of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs);Demonstrate basic skills in the use of computer-based music notation technology;Demonstrate basic skills and knowledge of technological principles of using computers for the recording, mixing and editing of digital audio and MIDI;Demonstrate basic knowledge and skills in using specific music software such as Logic, ProTools and Sibelius.

Student workload (150 hours) will be allocated to:• 24 hours attending lectures;• 12 hours attending laboratories;• 46 hours preparing for in-class assessments;• 68 hours creating creative work for assignments.

All assessments (electronic or hard copy) are due by 4pm on the specified date, in the format in which the assignment sheet has asked for.There are two assignments, two demonstration tasks and one in-class test for this course.
