This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the increasing importance of diversity in organisations. We study a range of theories and focus on how to apply those theories to real-world situations.
This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the increasing importance of diversity in organisations. Students will increase their awareness of the impact of demographic trends on organisations, the extent and causes of inequity in the labour market, and the capacities of organisations to redress employment inequity. We use a variety of multi-disciplinary literature to study how diversity is experienced and understood within organisations. Course StructureThe course will include a balance of cognitive and experiential learning opportunities such as case studies, videos, reflective exercises and group discussions. As a learning community, we depend on the community of students to share different views and perspectives. For the lectures to be useful for you and others, please Prepare for all class session, Attend all class sessions, Contribute to lecture discussions and exercises, and Thoughtfully complete assignments. Your professors see this as a PACT that will help you succeed in this class.Respect and Psychological SafetyThe philosophy underlying this course is that we learn best from each other. Diversity involves peoples’ core values and identities, and it can sometimes be a sensitive and emotional topic. Please help promote a safe environment for others to share their views and learn about your views. Conflict about topics and issues is alright because it can help us explore the different perspectives. Personal conflict (i.e., “Only an idiot would hold those views!”) can quickly close down the conversation. If you find yourself thinking these kinds of thoughts, try asking a question: “That’s interesting….. Tell me more about why you think X.”(See Course Outline for Lecture Dates and Topics)
