Description

The general principles of governing the formation of contracts, vitiating elements, breach of contract and remedies.

Contracts are an inescapable feature of our everyday lives. They consist of legally enforceable obligations that people have voluntarily assumed, and are fundamental to nearly all forms of commercial activity. This course explores the rules of law that apply to contracts generally, and includes a brief introduction to the law of agency. Other LAWS elective courses will examine those rules that apply to specific contractual arrangements, e.g. LAWS341 Insurance Law.

Learning Outcomes

  • At the completion of the course, students should be able to:
  •  Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of the law of contract in New Zealand;
  •  Apply the law of contract to complex factual situations; and
  •  Evaluate contract law rules in terms of principle, policy and/or practice.
