This is the second of two intermediate German language courses. This course extends the reading, writing and discussion skills acquired in GRMN251 and places greater emphasis on writing and reading skills, including the reading of short stories.
This course is the second semester and continuation of the intermediate German language course GRMN251. You should have knowledge of intermediate German grammar structures and vocabulary equivalent to A2, European framework. In this course you will work on all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. You will complete regular grammar and writing assignments, and there will be ample opportunity to speak and listen in a classroom setting and also online using i.e. Facebook and Instagram. You are encouraged to read German newspaper articles and a book in German during the term break.At the end of the course students will have German proficiency equivalent to level B1, Common European Framework (CEFR).This course leads on to GRMN321 German Language Advanced 1.
As a student in this course you will acquire skills in all four areas of functional literacy, reading, writing, speaking and listening. By the end of the course you will be able to read intermediate level literature (level B1) and short newspaper articles in German. Students will practice writing intensively and should be able to write a 200-word essay in German about a contemporary topic. The average student will be able to hold a conversation about everyday events and politics in German. Students’ listening comprehension should reach a level where they can understand German TV shows and talking books. Students will also develop skills in digital literacy, searching in German on the internet, evaluating German online resources, individually remixing internet information for presenting in class. By learning a foreign language students will develop more understanding of global conditions and will become competent in engaging with global and multi-cultural contexts. This will help the language students to develop knowledge and attributes sought by employers that can be used in a range of applications.External ExamsAfter this course you will be able to sit the Goethe Institute exam, level B1. The exam will take place at the University of Canterbury at the beginning of October and costs approx. $100.

GRMN251 or a placement test. Note: The course assumes a relatively high level of proficiency in German language. Even well prepared high school students should therefore enrol in GRMN251.
