Description

This is the sixth course in a sequence of six French language acquisition courses.

NOTE: this is not a course on French linguistics. The old FREN322 is now numbered FREN323.

This course is an advanced introduction to different aspects of French civilisation to further students' understanding of French language through the study of civilisation, and includes advanced grammar, advanced reading, discussions and listening comprehension. This course follows FREN321, or the equivalent.
The aims are to improve students' competence and accuracy in reading, writing, speaking and comprehension of French language and understanding of civilisation at advanced level C; to immerse students in authentic French at an advanced level; to improve students' passive and active accurate knowledge of vocabulary, and understanding, by using the French language; to improve students' grammar through the writing of essays, conversations and ateliers.

Learning Outcomes

  • At the end of this course students will have developed:
  • Grammar, as used in everyday interactions and  advanced situations.
  • A working knowledge of everyday words, plus some specialised vocabulary on prescribed topics.
  • Knowledge geared to grammatically analysing, stylistically assessing authentic modern French texts.
  • Ability to interact smoothly and intelligently within French society, based on an awareness of and sensitivity towards situational formulae and culture-specific behavioural patterns.
  • Advanced ability to analyse French grammar.
  • Ability to communicate confidently and accurately, and express a range of opinions on a variety of specialised topics.
  • Proficiency in everyday conversations at natural speed in a variety of situations, and comprehension of more advanced level discussions on a range of issues.
  • Ability to read and comprehend non-specialised French texts quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to read and comprehend some more advanced narrative, polemical and academic style French texts.
  • Ability to comprehend complex French texts with the help of a dictionary and similar resources.
  • High linguistic versatility derived from a variety of challenges in the four domains of language acquisition.
  • Preparedness to pursue higher level of attainment in French Studies or other areas of the humanities and social sciences.
