Description

This is the second course in a sequence of seven French language acquisition courses offered by the programme. Students without the formal prerequisite, but with some previous knowledge of French should consult the Programme Director to determine which course is the most appropriate.

This course is the second of two introductory courses for students who have no previous knowledge of French. It is the second course in a sequence of seven French language acquisition courses offered by the school. FREN122 is for advanced beginners or for people who have done a relatively minimal amount of French at school (year 1-11). It is not for students who have done four or more years of French at school. The course aims at an active mastery, both oral and written, of some basic structures of the French language. This course leads into FREN123.

Learning Outcomes

As a student in this course, you will develop the four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) covered in FREN121, and you will acquire a further understanding of grammatical concepts and an overall grasp of the workings of the French language.

You will:  -  increase your linguistic sensitivity, thus facilitating the acquisition of any
                 foreign language
             -   be aware of some everyday French social customs and non-verbal
                 communication
             -   be aware of appropriate everyday expressions and behaviours in context as
well as some basic knowledge of French culture.

By the end of the course you should be able to read and understand texts and articles in French, including basic poetry and songs, as well as write small paragraphs about your routine and activities. An average student will be able to speak reasonably well and confidently express themself about basic topics. Listening comprehension should reach a level where they will understand a variety of basic situations and be able to respond appropriately.
