Environmental Forestry
Description
Environmental certification systems; Resource Management Act; environmental planning; environmental management of plantation systems.
The objective of this course is to provide students with an understanding of the environmental values associated with plantation forests, and the reasons for and skills necessary to manage these values. This will be achieved through the lectures and field trips focusing on the environmental benefits from ‘good’ plantation forest management.
Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes that students will have from this course include:
• An understanding of the environmental values associated with plantation forests including soil and water, biodiversity and invasive species.
• An understanding of regulatory and certification systems that relate to environmental value management.
Subject to approval to the Chair, Forestry Board of Studies.
Timetable
This is a Term 4 course only. There will be weekend field trips - these will scheduled following commencement of the course.

There is no text book for the course, but references for lectures will be available on Learn. McLaren JP (1996), Environment Effects of Planted Forests in New Zealand (FRI Bulletin 198) provides a popular overview of many of the issues covered in this course.
