Description

The European Union is at a critical, yet fascinating, stage of its development and the purpose of this course is to evaluate EU decision-making and policy in this context.

The course evaluates how policies designed and decisions taken by European institutions in areas such as competition, industry policy, the environment, monetary and fiscal affairs, and enlargement, impact on business strategies and trade. Particular attention is paid to case studies of firms operations and current debates, especially in the light of enlargement, the impact of the Euro and the recent financial crisis.

Learning Outcomes

  • To understand, critically analyse and explain:
  • The changing business structure of the EU, the core sectors, key company strategies and core current business issues;
  • The relationships between the major institutions of the EU including the European Parliament, Commission and the significance of business lobbying for EU decision-making;
  • Differing forms of integration and the impact on emerging trade and policy patterns;
  • The importance, and changing nature, of foreign direct investment in the EU, particularly in the context of enlargement;
  • Business support in the context of recent developments in the EU budget and regional policy shifts;
  • The development of EU industry and competition policies and emerging issues with particular reference to specific company cases from sectors including air transport, automobiles, telecommunications and pharmaceuticals;
  • EU policy on innovation and R&D and implications with respect to the Lisbon Agenda post-2010;
  • The nature and importance of, and issues facing, the small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector in the EU;
  • The impact of globalisation on EU business.

    To be able to:
  • appraise and synthesise case study material and EU documentation;
  • analyse EU policies and their implications;
  • evaluate business strategies  with reference to a business of their choice;
  • access and evaluate European data and statistics.

Prerequisites

Any 30 point in EURO 100 level courses OR any 45 points at 100 level in Arts, Commerce, Law OR any other 45 points at 100 level with the approval of the Course Coordinator.
