This occurrence is not offered
Description
This course examines aspects of European culture through French, German and Russian films.
This course examines social and cultural issues of contemporary Europe as represented in recent cinema. Its particular focus is on films from Germany, Russia and France.
We will identify the socio-political context for recent transformations in these three dominant European countries, and will study the ways in which recent films reflect these issues. Written texts - fiction, essays, documentaries - are used to complement the study.
This course is taught in four distinct modules, focusing on France, Germany, Russia and Spain.
Learning Outcomes
Students should, by the end of the course, have gained an overview of some key issues in several European societies, learnt to discuss these issues as presented in a selection of films, and reflected on these examples of film-making in their cultural and historical context.
