Description

Transport planning. Traffic flow theory. Roadway and intersection design. Road safety. Traffic surveys. Transport project evaluation. Environmental impacts. Traffic management.

Learning Outcomes

1.  Learning basic traffic flow theory and simulation for the analysis of traffic flow situations and the interaction of flow efficiency. (Washington Accord WA1), (UC EIE3, CE3)

2.  Apply basic optimization techniques for describing the route choice behavior in transport networks and methods to influence transport demand in urban areas  (Washington Accord WA1), (UC EIE3, CE3, GA2)

3.  Apply basic techniques for collecting and analyzing traffic data, diagnosing problems, designing appropriate remedial treatment, and assessing its effectiveness (Washington Accord WA1, WA4), (UC EIE2, EIE3, EIE4)

4.  Apply basic techniques for controlling traffic flow (i.e. reduce traffic congestion). (Washington Accord WA4, WA7), (UC EIE2, EIE3, EIE4)

5.  Explain the key differences between Macroscopic, Mesoscopic and Microscopic mathematical traffic models (Washington Accord WA1, WA10), (UC EIE3, EIE4)

6.  Learning Cell Transmission Model as one of the widely used macroscopic simulation models for predicting density evolution (time and space)  (Washington Accord WA1, WA3, WA5), (UC EIE3, EIE4, EIE5)

7.  Learning SATURN simulation software to solve traffic assignment problems and work on realistic planning/design problems (Washington Accord WA4 WA5), (UC EIE3, EIE4, EIE5)

8.  Designing signalised intersections, simulating realistic traffic scenarios in microscopic simulation AIMSUN (Washington Accord WA1, WA5, WA3), (UC EIE3, EIE4, EIE5)

Late assignments will have 20% deducted for each day late, unless prior arrangement has been made. Please contact the course co-ordinator (preferably well in advance) if you have genuine difficulties meeting submission dates.

The final 3-hr exam, will cover all the course material. Any “CIVIL/UC” approved calculator is allowed.  Students with accepted Aegrotats for an exam may be assessed on the basis of their other assignment marks or they may be required to undertake a special oral examination.

While a minimum 50% overall grade for the year is the usual benchmark for passing, to guarantee a pass in the course students must also achieve at least 40% in the total internal coursework (assignments) and the final exam. Students who fail to reach all of these criteria will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Repeating students should discuss with the Course Coordinator what coursework they need to repeat. If desired, they may be able to bring forward any or all of their internal coursework from the previous year, but this must be confirmed first. All students will sit the final exam
