Description

Behaviour and design of steel members. Frame analysis and design considering higher-order effects and plasticity. Composite beams. Fatigue. Steel frame seismic design. Cold-formed members.

This course introduces students to the economical design of steel framed structures. Expertise in basic steel member design techniques, from ENCI336, and in structural system concepts, from ENCI429, is assumed. Students design and detail a portal frame, as well as an earthquake resisting (moment or braced) frame. Beams are designed for torsion, fatigue, and floor vibration. Composite beam and plate girder design methods are considered. Design methods for fire and corrosion are introduced. Cold formed steel members are discussed. NZS3404 steel code approximate analysis methods are checked using static analysis with geometric and material nonlinearity, and static and time history analysis methods are used to consider earthquake.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course students should be able to design simple steel structures for both earthquake and non-earthquake conditions.
