Description

This course provides an overview of major trends in philosophy of education from the 1960s to the present day. Particular emphasis will be placed on the relationship between epistemology, ethics and education. Students will have the opportunity to address the work of selected thinkers in critical detail, and will be encouraged to apply philosophical skills to practical educational problems.

Learning Outcomes

On the successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

1.  Develop and address educationally significant questions in a philosophically rigorous manner.
2.  Review and understand the literature relevant to several areas of philosophical inquiry in education.
3.  Critically evaluate policy documents and other educational texts.
4.  Analyse and construct educational arguments.
5.  Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the work of selected educational thinkers.
6.  Apply philosophical ideas and methods to practical contexts.
