Description

How do learning researchers study learning? What are the problems which have to be solved in order to discover why learning sometimes occurs and sometimes doesn’t? What are some of the implications of recent research on learning for the design of effective teaching and self-directed learning procedures? Students will have the opportunity to plan and conduct a small study of learning and will learn how to find and interpret relevant research reports. The course provides a strong foundation for self-directed learning, post-graduate study and research.

Learning Outcomes

A knowledge of the different research methods which are being used to study learning
The ability to design and carry out a within subject, repeated measures study of the effects of teaching on learning
The ability to describe some of the key findings of research into the conditions upon which learning depends.
A knowledge of some of the teaching strategies which have been found to be effective in bringing about different kinds of learning outcomes.
An ability to critically evaluate claims about teaching and learning.

Pre-requisites

15 points from EDUC201, EDUC202, EDUC204, EDUC205, EDUC221, EDUC222 or permission of the Head of School

Grade moderation

EDUC301 grades are moderated at a 300 Level examiners' meeting at the end of the second semester.

Late submission of work

No report will be accepted for assessment once the process of returning marked reports has begun.

Applications for an extension of time on the report should be made directly to the course coordinator and must include documentation to support the claim that completion of the report was delayed by circumstances beyond the student's control.
