Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Display an understanding of classroom routines and procedures.
2. Write and present episodic lesson plans that are curriculum specific based on clearly achievable learning outcomes and that ensures continuity and progression.
3. Plan and present lessons which cater for a range of abilities
4. Demonstrate sound knowledge of the content, skills and processes of the area(s) being taught
5. Demonstrate familiarity with the resources available in the school and its environment.
6. Demonstrate the ability to manage teaching resources, materials and equipment.
7. Demonstrate a variety of communication presentation skills.
8. Demonstrate skills in using a range of presentation technologies.
9. Demonstrate the ability to give clear instructions, directions and explanations.
10. Demonstrate appropriate class management techniques.
11. Establish and maintain a positive and inclusive classroom environment
12. Develop and employ a range of questioning skills.
13. Employ a range of teaching strategies appropriate to the subject or topic.
14. Apply the principles of assessment and assessment procedures appropriate to curriculum content and level.
15. Record and evaluate assessment
16. Understand basic school routines and procedures.
17. Use self assessment and reflection to improve teaching practice
18. Understand and use Tikanga and Te Reo where appropriate

Academic integrity

All forms of cheating and dishonest practice are taken seriously and penalties will result. Students should refer to General Course and Examination Regulation J: Dishonest Practice and Breach of Instructions and the Assessment Guidelines for Students: Assessment, Referencing and Written Assignment Preparation for Physical Education and BSpC, Courses, 2011.

Assessment and grading system

Competency based assessment is used in this course and involves assessment against learning outcomes or defined criteria. In order to obtain on overall passing grade students are required to obtain a P grade for ALL assessment tasks in the course. See the Assessment Guidelines for Students: Assessment, Referencing and Written Assignment Preparation for Physical Education and BSpC, Courses, 2011 for further information on grades and criteria.

Attendance

Students must complete the Teaching Practice in the designated time frame allocated. If a student is unable to attend Teaching Practice for any reason, they must follow school procedures plus email their visiting lecturer.

Evaluation

Students will be asked to complete Course and Teacher Evaluations using UCTL evaluative instruments. The Faculty of Education will conduct regular graduate surveys under the direction of the Dean of Education.

Grade moderation

All course assessments are moderated within courses and selected courses assessments are moderated externally. A sample of your work may be used as part of the internal and external moderation process. Regular Validation Meetings monitor the distribution of final grades in courses and adjustments are made if necessary to ensure reasonable consistency and comparability of course grades.

Late submission of work

Visiting lecturers will seek evidence of tasks to date when observing on Teaching Practice. All completed Teaching Practice Portfolio tasks are due when students debrief with their Visiting Lecturer.

Contribution to the wider school community is required.

Requests for extensions

Extensions are reserved for exceptional circumstances only and are not granted automatically. Under exceptional circumstances (e.g. illness, accident, bereavement or critical personal circumstances) you may be granted an extension of the Teaching Practice or the  due date for submission of your Teaching Practice Portfolio. The due date of the assignment will be negotiated with the lecturer.

A request for an extension should be made before the due date of the piece of assessment, in writing by  email. In emergencies a phone call to the lecturer would be appropriate. If you apply for an extension, you will be asked to supply a medical certificate or other relevant evidence of special circumstances (e.g. a letter from a counsellor).

Resubmissions

A resubmission is available to students where students have achieved most, but not all, of the learning outcomes required within the assessment tasks. Work can only be resubmitted once. Work must be resubmitted to the course lecturer within five days.

Where to submit and collect work

Please submit work to Visiting Lecturer upon completion of Teaching Practice.
