This compulsory course for teachers upgrading from the DipT to BTchLn qualification, covers developments in theoretical understandings of teaching and learning processes. Particular attention is paid to the theory and principles underpinning current practice in New Zealand primary schools and early childhood centres. An in depth examination of a chosen theory or principle is undertaken by participants in relation to their own practice.
By the end of this course successful students will be able to:Identify the major theoretical rationales for current educational practice;Critically analyse how major theories of learning and development have influenced educational processes;Critique two significant theoretical perspectives related to teaching or learning;Evaluate how personal practice has been influenced by a particular learning theory or teaching principle;Critically reflect on the planning, implementing and reporting of a small-scale investigation into an aspect of personal educational practice.

Distance students must participate in the course via Learn to meet the learning outcomes. Students are responsible for obtaining relevant lecture/course information via Learn. This will mean regular engagement with forums and course materials on the Learn site. Participation will enhance your understanding of issues and allow for discussion and clarification of complex issues. Online activity will ensure all students can discuss, debate and reflect. Insufficient participation in the course will jeopardise students passing the course.
A course evaluation sheet is provided.
A comparison of grades between lecturers will be undertaken to ensure consistency.
Assignments submitted by hand, email, fax, drop-box or any other online repository after the due date, with no extension granted, are considered 'late'. Assignments submitted by post or courier which are date stamped by the Academic Services Team more than two days after the due date are considered 'late'. 'Late' work is not accepted unless an extension has been granted or exceptional circumstances justified. Please refer to the Assessment Guidelines for students.
Use Learn site for updated information.
Complete a non-assessed introductory response sheet, completed within the first week.
An extension may be applied for (either formally through email or informally via a telephone call) prior to the due date. An extension after the due date is likely to be declined other than in exceptional circumstances. This then would imply a course failure. Generally a two week extension is the maximum allowed.
A resubmission may be granted for up to two weeks maximum (defined as from three days after posting from UCCE unless the student is an international student). A resubmission will only be granted if the concerns are relatively minor. An assignment will not be granted a resubmission if the concerns are deemed as substantial.
Students will be expected to submit their assessments via the online assessment system in the Learn (Moodle) class site by 5.00pm on or before the due date. The lecturer may also ask students to submit assessment work through the software Turnitin, to check for plagiarism. If this option is available students will submit work through Turnitin and obtain a report, after submitting assignments for marking via the Learn site. It is the responsibility of the students to check their Internet access and ability to submit their work via the online system. Any technical difficulties should be notified well in advance of the due date so that assistance can be provided or alternative arrangements can be negotiated. (Students who do not have broadband internet access, or who have unreliable access are advised to attend to this early in the course to prevent last minute pressures.) If you require assistance, please email ictservicedesk@canterbury.ac.nz, or phone 0800 763 676 ext 6060.
