An advanced study of theoretical and research-based foundations of specialist teaching relating to understanding, recognising, assessing and providing for learners who have complex educational needs.
Students who successfully complete this paper should be able to:1. Critically examine theory, research and practice relevant to the field of learners with complex educational needs;2. Apply specialist skills, values, attitudes, and practices needed for professionals to work with students who have complex educational needs including evidence based assessments and teaching strategies;3. Demonstrate professional skills relating to evidence-based, reflective and ethical practice when working with children who have complex educational needs, their parents and other professionals;4. Demonstrate an understanding of Māori and multicultural concepts and practices as they relate to students who have complex educational needs.

This programme includes two compulsory face-to-face block courses. The first block course will be held at Massey University's Albany campus on Monday 10th-Friday 14th February 2014. Students enrolled in EDST651 are required to attend on Thursday 13th February (1 pm-5 pm) and Friday 14th February (9 am-5 pm). The second block course for this programme will be held at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch on Monday 25th-Friday 29th August 2014. Students enrolled in EDST651 are required to attend on Monday 25th (9 am-5 pm) and Tuesday 26th August (9 am-12.30 pm). Further information related to these block courses will be forwarded in mid-January once enrolment is confirmed.
