Description

This is a 300 level compulsory course which focuses on structures, issues and practices affecting early childhood centres, issues related to the early childhood profession and practical aspects of operating within the profession. The course examines the role of early childhood professionals as advocates for children and families particularly in relation to the parliamentary process, legislation and policy

Learning Outcomes

By the conclusion of the course, successful students will be able to:
• Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between national structures/organisations and individual settings.
• Identify and analyse ways in which an early child professional can take part in decision making and advocacy processes which impact on the early childhood field.
• Analyse a range of issues related to the early childhood profession and practical aspects of operating within the profession.
• Demonstrate an understanding of legislation relevant to early childhood teaching.

Academic integrity

Assessment and grading system

There are two assignments for this course. Each is weighted as stated above and graded using the university A+ to D scale.  Note: satisfactory completion of each asigment to at least a C- grade is required to pass the course.

Attendance

Attendance at all class sessions is expected throughout the course. Insufficient attendance at course sessions may prevent a student from attending teaching practice or may impact on course assessment.  Attendance is compulsory at specified sessions.

Evaluation

Formal and informal evaluation will take place in accordance with the relevant Course Evaluation Policy, to provide feedback to teaching staff about the relevance and validity of what has been learned as well as the quality of course delivery.
