This course provides students with advanced knowledge and understanding of inclusive and special education history, philosophy, policy and practice. The course will examine the historical development of inclusive and special education at global, regional and local levels. Philosophies and theories underpinning inclusive and special education policies and practices will be investigated. Students will research and critically evaluate aspects pertaining to current and past practices, theories and debates in the field.
Students completing this course will be able to:1. Understand the history, philosophies, policies and procedures of inclusive and special education.2. Discuss discourses of disability, policies and resources.3. Understand issues in the conceptualisation and classification of children with special educational needs;4. Know how to critically evaluate effectiveness of interventions in inclusive and special education.5. Know of a range of effective pedagogical and teaching strategies in inclusive and special education.6. Understand a range of assessment approaches and techniques.7. Know of a range of effective behavioural strategies.8. Discuss the education, curriculum and interventions for children with various types of special needs. 9. Understand how to work effectively as a collaborative team member with other professionals, parents, family and whanau in a variety of cultural contexts.

Distance students have the choice of joining the class online at the same time as the on campus students - via Adobe Connect. This allows participation in some of the small group discussions that occur during these meetings. These sessions are also recorded - so all students can also review key points of discussion by viewing the recordings. There are interactive forums and other activities posted on the Learn site that both campus and distance students complete.
