Description

Research as a Practitioner is a compulsory 300 level course which provides students with an understanding of an action research process; the significance of educational research for improving the quality of early childhood practice; the ethics of research with young children and research strategies which are particularly applicable to and useful for early childhood teachers. The assignment and course work has been developed to reflect the relationship between class time and in-centre practicum hours.

Learning Outcomes

By the conclusion of the course students will be able to:
1 Use an action research model to collect, collate and analyse data in an investigative and evaluative manner in an early childhood setting.
2 Communicate findings of a research investigation in an educational setting in an appropriate format.

Academic integrity

All forms of cheating and dishonest practice are taken seriously and penalties will result. Students should refer to Regulation J of the General Course and Examination Regulations.

Assessment and grading system

There are three parts to the assignment for this course. Each is weighted as stated above and graded using the university A+ to D scale. Note: satisfactory completion of the assignment to at least a C grade is required to pass the course.

Attendance

Attendance is expected at all class sessions. Insufficient attendance in a course may make the student ineligible for teaching practice. As a professional courtesy, the student should ring or email the lecturer to report an absence.

Evaluation

Formal and informal evaluation will take place in accordance with the relevant Course Evaluation Policy, to provide feedback to teaching staff about the relevance and validity of what has been learned as well as the quality of course delivery.

Grade moderation

The College undertakes a process of internal and external moderation of assessment. This is to ensure that the assessment systrem is fair, equitable, consistent and manageable.

Late submission of work

Work handed in past the due date is considered late. Late work may be accepted up to one week after the due date and a grade penalty may be incurred. Late work is not eligible for resubmission. The lecturer reserves the right not to mark late work. No work will be accepted after assignments have been returned.

Other specific requirements

• Assignments must be word processed in Times New Roman 12 point font with 1.5 line spacing and stapled in the corner.
• Do not use clear folders to present work
• Keep a copy of all work

Requests for extensions

(Reserved for exceptional circumstances only and are not granted automatically). The student must contact the lecturer by email or telephone at least 48 hours prior to the due date. An extension form is to be completed by the student, signed by the lecturer, and attached to the assignment when submitted.

Resubmissions

If work meets most (but not all) of the criteria required to pass, the student may be given the opportunity to resubmit an assessment to bring it to a passing standard. Resubmissions are restricted to work that is originally submitted on or before the due date. Late work will not be considered for resubmission. Distance students will have ten days from expected receipt date to complete resubmissions. The original work and marking sheet must be attached to the resubmitted version.

Aegrotat Considerations

Assessments for this course are not eligible for Aegrotats.

Where to submit and collect work

Students are to attach a completed and signed asignment cover sheet. Assigments are to be submitted via the lecturer’s study slot or by other arrangement by the due date. Assignments will be marked and returned within a four-week period (exclusive of statutory holidays or lecturer leave) as per instructions by the lecturer.
