This course will challenge students to critically assess both digital cultures, and their relationship to them. Students will engage with digital tools they might not have experienced before, and consider how a range of digital tools enable, restrict and/or undermine their role as citizens.
We will study the diverse, pervasive and highly contested topic of digital culture to ask questions such as: how do digital technologies shape culture? What is the relationship between digital media and identity? How do digital cultures understand and represent the body? In what ways is digital culture connected to public life and political discourse? We will engage with key thinkers on the impacts of digital technologies, and will study a range of texts – including fiction, non-fiction, film and games – to understand the effects of digital media on cultural life.
