DESI301-12W (C)
Whole Year 2012
Graphic Design
Description
Projects relating to publications and book design. Professional development with industry engagement. Research focus on developing individual practice.
The move into DESI301, the second year in the Design Studio, represents a big shift in expectation. This year the student will receive no briefed projects and will be responsible for developing their own body of work in relation to certain lines of inquiry that they themselves will outline in the form of a ‘Teaching and Learning Agreement’ (a dynamic proposal/contract between the student and their supervising lecturer). This document remains fluid during the year and can be updated as the nature of the student’s work evolves, but the initial TLA must be completed and handed into both lecturers by the third week of the first term.
The DESI301course will begin with an introduction to different ideas about practice-based research, and students will be introduced to strategies that will enable them to develop their own field of inquiry for the year. This will take the form of reading groups, discussions, and workshops in the initial weeks of Term One. Students will meet as a group once a week during this first term. Following this period students will be given time to produce work before presenting it in formal critiques. These will take place twice in each the following three academic terms. DESI301 students will also be required to attend three 401. Beyond these organised meetings and critiques lecturers are available by appointment. Students at this stage of their degree should exhibit considerably more gumption and self-motivation than in the previous year.
