Description

A survey of Chinese cinema - the first one hundred years of the Chinese film industry, major Chinese film genres, social implications of film and the Chinese culture reflected through film. The course is taught in English and all films are subtitled.

The course is divided into four teaching modules:
1. Early Chinese film and Chinese Socio-Cultural Situations (1905-1977);
2. Contemporary Mainland Chinese Films and Global Culture (1978 - );
3. Hong Kong films and (Post-) Colonial Culture;
4. Taiwan and other Chinese language films.

Learning Outcomes

The course will impart knowledge and provide research training in the following fields:
1. To study Chinese culture and society as represented on film, as well as how Chinese cultural and social development has influenced the making of these films.
2. To survey a century of Chinese film development ("Dingjun Mountain", filmed in 1905, is believed to be the first film made in China).
3. To further develop students' analytical skills in the contexts of cultural studies and film studies.

Prerequisites

15 points of CHIN at 200 level with a B pass or above, or
any 30 points in CHIN at 200 level, or
any 45 points from the Arts Schedule at 200 level. RP: 200 level in one of the following areas are helpful: Chinese, Cinema Studies, Cultural Studies
