A survey of Chinese cinema - the first one hundred years of the Chinese film industry, major Chinese film genres, social implications of film and the Chinese culture reflected through film. The course is taught in English and all films are subtitled.
The course is divided into four teaching modules:1. Chinese film from the Beginning to the Cultural Revolution (1905 - 1977);2. Contemporary Mainland Chinese films (1978 - );3. Hong Kong films;4. Taiwan and other Chinese language films.
The course will impart the knowledge and provide research training in the following fields:1. To survey a century of Chinese film development ("Dingjun Mountain" filmed in 1905, is believed to be the first film made in China).2. To study Chinese culture and society as represented on film, as well as how Chinese cultural and social development has influenced the making of these films.3. To further develop students' analytical skills in the contexts of cultural studies and film studies.4. In addition to the above, the course will equip students with the knowledge and skills to further pursue two or more of the following: studies of Chinese culture and society; cross-cultural studies which focus on China/Asia and beyond; cultural studies with a special emphasis on postmodernism (including postcolonialism) and Third World Culture; film studies focusing on national cinema.
