Description

This course aims to introduce students to the theory and practice of working with different types of groups in a helping context. Students will be given the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills in the areas of group process and group leadership.

The emphasis will be on providing a balance of theory and practice to assist students to gain knowledge and confidence in co-leading groups in a counselling context. This will include learning focused on the theoretical foundations of group work, including group leadership, types and purposes of group and stages of group development. Students will have the opportunity to plan and co-lead a group experience, and receive class and lecturer feedback. Students will be encouraged to be both self-reflective and reflexive in their learning.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to:
  • understand and apply the theoretical foundations of group work in a counselling context
  • understand and apply principles of group leadership  
  • understand and apply key concepts and issues of group processes and stages of group development
  • apply this learning in critical and reflective ways through class interaction and
    assignment preparation

Evaluation

Formal and informal evaluation will take place in accordance with the relevant Course Evaluation Policy, to provide feedback to staff about the relevance and validity of what has been learned as well as the quality of course delivery.

Late submission of work

Late submission of Assignment 1 will accrue grade reduction as per the course outline.  Late submission of assignment 2 is not possible.

Requests for extensions

In the event of exceptional circumstances (e.g. illness, accident, bereavement or critical personal circumstances) that prevent you from working, you may apply for an extension before the due date for an assignment.  You should contact the lecturer responsible for that piece of assessment in writing, and explain why you are requesting an extension.

Resubmissions

Resubmissions are not accepted.

Aegrotat Considerations

If you are prevented from completing any major item or items of work for assessment in a course, or consider that your performance in any major item or items of work for assessment in a course has been impaired by illness, injury, bereavement or any other critical circumstance you may apply for aegrotat consideration. Aegrotat consideration is available only for major items of work. Major items are examinations, tests and other work worth not less than 10% of the total assessment. Please refer to the Special consideration document

Where to submit and collect work

Students will be expected to submit their assessments via the online assessment system in the Learn (Moodle) class site by 5.00pm on or before the due date. The lecturer may also ask students to submit assessment work through the software Turnitin, to check for plagiarism. If this option is available students will submit work through Turnitin and obtain a report, after submitting assignments for marking via the Learn site.

It is the responsibility of the students to check their Internet access and ability to submit their work via the online system.  Any technical difficulties should be notified well in advance of the due date so that assistance can be provided or alternative arrangements can be negotiated. (Students who have unreliable internet access are advised to attend to this early in the course to prevent last minute pressures.)
