Description

Special Topic: Planning Media Advocacy Campaigns

When you advocate an idea, you need to communicate with your audiences. Certainly you want to do it efficiently and effectively, but how?  The first step is to make a good plan. This is an introductory course in advocacy communication for undergraduates interested in the topic. Most students in this class are supposed to be learning about advocacy communication the first time. (Even though advocacy communication is actually everywhere!)

The course will start with a broad introduction of what advocacy communication is, its purpose and effects, and its importance in the society. After understanding the basics, a significant portion of the course will be devoted to developing a media advocacy plan. Students will be given opportunities to develop their advocacy communication plans according to their interests. Such plans can be related to social policies, public health, human rights, etc., and can be delivered through different communication channels including both traditional mass media and social media. Detailed step-by-step guidelines for this project will be given as we move through the semester.
