European Novels and Film Adaptations
Description
A study of important European novels and film adaptations.
The course studies major nineteenth- and- twentieth centuries European novels in English translation and their adaptations in the countries of their origin and other countries of continental Europe. We shall read and discuss the great novels written by major Russian, French and German writers and the way in which they have been made into films by recent film directors in the respective countries. The course studies the following novels and films in the chronological order: Fedor Dostoevsky’s "Crime and Punishment" (1866) and the film "Crime and Punishment" dir. Lev Kulidjanov (1967) film adaptations in English, Emile Zola’s "Germinal" (1885) and the film "Germinal" (1993) dir. Claude Berri; Thomas Mann’s novel "Death in Venice" (1912) and the film "Death in Venice" dir. Luchino Visconti (1971).
Any 45 points, or equivalent preparation with the approval of the Programme Coordinator.
