Description

How do rituals work? What do they achieve? What makes symbols potent? From Rastafarianism and Reggae music to San trace dance and rock art; this course introduces students to major contemporary theoretical approaches to the study of rituals and symbols in anthropology. It explores the ways in which rituals work, and the ways in which symbols facilitate what rituals do. In this way students gain a deep understanding of the nature of culture, including that of their own society.
