Postgraduate Diploma in Business Information Systems

The Postgraduate Diploma in Business Information Systems consists of eight of the nine courses required for the Master of Business Information Systems.

It is ideal for students wanting a shorter postgraduate option or not ready for Master's study. It can be completed in eight to 12 months full-time, or up to four years part-time.

Students who complete the PGDipBIS with a B average can apply to transfer to the MBIS and complete one further course along with a capstone project or internship.

No prior subject background is required but a B average is required in any previous undergraduate degree. Business Information Systems courses enable students to bridge gaps in technical knowledge and remain competitive in the evolving world of modern business.

The Business Information Systems programme enables people from different backgrounds to gain the skills and knowledge to work in the Information Systems sector. Graduates can expect to:

  • Be prepared for a wide variety of information systems roles including business systems analyst, IT project manager, systems architect, IS consultant and business intelligence analyst
  • Work for large multinational organisations or local businesses.

Our programme is ideal for recent graduates who are looking for a direct path into a professional role. It is also an excellent choice for professionals seeking to transition into a new role in information systems. PGDipBIS participants are typically graduates from any undergraduate discipline or professionals in entry to mid-level roles from organisations of any size and sector.

Multiple entry qualifications offer you a number of study options depending on your professional career goals.*

1. Postgraduate Diploma in Business Information Systems (PGDipBIS)

The Postgraduate Diploma in Business Information Systems consists of eight courses. These courses constitute eight of the nine courses required for the MBIS.

The diploma takes eight to 12 months to complete full-time, or can be completed in up to four years part-time. Having satisfied all requirements for the Postgraduate Diploma with a B average or above, prior to graduating, you can apply to transfer to the MBIS.

Duration: Part-time up to four years and with full-time study it will take 8-12 months.

2. Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS)

In addition to the course requirements for the postgraduate diploma, by completing a further course and the capstone project or internship, you can graduate with the full MBIS.

The internship will provide an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge to a real world problem, allowing them to gain confidence in dealing in a professional business environment, as well as engaging in a deeper level of learning through application of critical thinking and problem-solving. The internship will consist of 100 hours of work (on a discrete IS-related project) within an organisation followed by a report on the student’s experience.

The applied Research Project will provide the opportunity for students to apply their knowledge to practice, allowing them to gain confidence in working in a professional business environment, as well as engaging in a deeper level of learning through application of critical thinking and problem solving.

The MBIS gives you the flexibility to undertake additional study in areas that interest you with our elective options. For the project you will investigate an IS-related issue impacting organisations, people or society.

Duration: Part-time up to four years and with full-time study it will take 12-14 months.

*In consultation, a personal course of study that differs from that outlined above can be completed, subject to the approval of the Dean of Commerce.
