student and teacher in business office discussing strategy

Welcome to the Department of Accounting and Information Systems.

In conjunction with colleagues in the College of Business and Law and the wider University, the Department delivers courses for the degrees of BCom, BCom(Hons), MCom, PhD, UC Executive Development Programmes, MBA and MEM programmes. Our learning programmes help students to meet the membership entry education requirements of professional accounting bodies such as Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand (CA ANZ), ACCA, and CPA Australia.

Courses are clustered according to several functional areas:

  • Financial Accounting and Reporting
  • Auditing; Management Accounting and Control
  • Information Systems and Technology
  • Business Law
  • Taxation

Although diverse, all of these areas involve facilitating order among the assorted activities of people in public and private companies, social enterprises, partnerships, governmental organisations, NGOs, sole traders, and the community. At postgraduate level, courses are not only research-informed, they are research-oriented, and often lead to students publishing original ideas.

Our staff perform cutting-edge research, engaging in broader scholarship, and carrying out curriculum design and evaluation work, alongside their teaching. A significant result of the staff pursuits are publications based on the practical knowledge that research studies uncover and theories induced and deduced from this knowledge. They lead to applications and innovations in industry, commerce, governments and people's lives.

Department staff

The Department comprises about 30 highly motivated, enthusiastic, hardworking and knowledgeable staff. Their offices are located on the 4th and 5th floors of the Business and Law Building. Most of the time they are to be seen elsewhere – conducting research (that is built into their teaching), presenting lectures, facilitating tutorials, chairing seminars, speaking at international conferences, workshops, seminars and symposia, and much more.
