ESI Bright Ideas

ESI "Bright Ideas" is a fund whose purpose is to help develop an innovative culture which encourages technology based ideas to escape from the University into the world at large. ESI is a collaborative project involving Canterbury, Otago and Lincoln Universities funded by the Tertiary Education Commission under the Encouraging and Supporting Innovation (E&SI) scheme. University of Canterbury funding for this purpose is $1M over two and a half years from July 2008 to December 2010.

The spirit of "Bright Ideas" funding is to responsively support early stage ideas with a maximum of flexibility and a minimum of bureaucracy. Funding may be used for a variety of purposes from purchasing materials, supporting post-graduate students, to market assessment etc. The key feature of supported applications will be how the funding helps take the concept to the next stage.

To apply for funding simply fill out one of the Bright Ideas application forms.  There are three types of applications:

  • <$5K (one page)
  • <$30K (four pages)
  • Staff Buy-out (two pages)

We are always looking for innovative ways of helping ideas in universities reach escape velocity.

Bright Ideas aims to encourage innovation within the University. Applications where the majority of the budget is spent within the University will have a greater chance of success.  If you would like to know more background about Bright Ideas please call Bill Swallow (ext 7463).
