Programme overview

The Certificate in Foundation Studies is a 26 week full time programme. The programme covers English language and study skills and academic preparation for degree level studies in the Arts (Humanities and Social Sciences), Commerce, Engineering, Law, and Science. Arts students should discuss a course of study with the Programme Leader before commencing study.

Programme structure

The programme is divided into two semesters each lasting thirteen weeks.
In your first semester you will take three courses. In your second semester you will take four courses. Course advice is offered to students during orientation week.

Programme objectives

While undertaking the Foundation Studies programmes you will:

Students in a Foundation Studies Computing class
  • Develop proficiency in the English language and its use for academic purposes; and
  • Develop the skills necessary to participate actively and effectively in lectures and tutorials; and
  • Gain an understanding of lecturers’ expectations regarding written assignments and tests; and
  • Increase your content knowledge in subjects you intend to study as an undergraduate student at the University; and
  • Develop an understanding of New Zealand culture and society to assist you in living and studying here.

Assessment

In order to be awarded the Certificate you must fully participate in class activities, prepare your class work and complete your assessments. To qualify for the award of the Certificate you must:
  • Complete such oral, practical, written and other work as the Programme Manager may require;
  • Gain credit for the compulsory courses;
  • Attain a grade average of C or better across the full programme.
